On July 4, schools and colleges across Andhra Pradesh and Telangana will close in response to a Bharat Bandh called by several student groups, including the Students’ Federation of India (SFI), Progressive Democratic Students Union (PDSU), All India Students’ Federation (AISF), and Communist Party of India (CPI). The bandh aims to highlight multiple issues within the education sector and demand a re-examination for NEET-UG candidates, alleging manipulation in the results affecting around 24 lakh students.

Key Points of the Protest:

  1. Re-examination for NEET-UG: Students are demanding a re-examination for NEET-UG candidates due to alleged result manipulations.
  2. Improvement in Hostel Facilities: The protest calls for better basic facilities in hostels, including the immediate filling of vacant positions for wardens, cooks, and watchmen.
  3. Fee Reduction: There is a demand to reduce mess charges in hostels, as many students are struggling to afford the current expenses.
  4. Construction of Compound Walls: The student unions are pushing for the construction of compound walls around women’s dormitories in Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya’s (KGBVs) and Gurukuls to enhance safety.
  5. Quality of Food in Hostels: The call for bandh intensified after around 50 girls at a KGBV in Amar Chinta village fell ill due to contaminated food, underscoring the need for better food quality in hostels.
  6. Government Anti-Student Policies: The Telugu Nadu Students Federation (TNSF) is also opposing what they term as anti-student policies and supporting the bandh to push for reforms.
  7. Opposition to Fee Hikes: The TNSF President has demanded action against private institutions that have hiked fees, advocating for a government-regulated fee structure.
  8. Support from Political Leaders: Telangana Congress MLC Balmuri Venkat supports the bandh, urging the government to take measures to prevent exam paper leaks and address student concerns effectively.
