Kavitha, BRS party leader and MLC has been languishing within Tihar Jail for the past six months on charges of involvement in the Delhi Liquor Scam case. Her plea for bail was being heard in the Supreme Court recently but the court refused to grant bail and advised her to approach the trial court for any relief.
What the Supreme Court Said
In a three-judge bench, the Supreme Court refused to take up Kavitha’s bail petition. The court directed her to approach the trial court for bail, as the remedy of applying for bail has to be addressed through the regular course of law. Further, the Supreme Court considered some of the issues raised by her regarding the Prevention of Money Laundering Act and issued formal notices to the ED seeking their response within six weeks.
Details of the Case
Kavitha was arrested in March 2024 on charges related to the Delhi liquor scam. Authorities from Enforcement Directorate have charged that she played a big role in it. Though several efforts were made by her counsels, Kavitha has been staying in the jail as the court extended her days due to investigations underway.
Support from BRS Leaders
A day ahead of the Supreme Court hearing, several senior leaders of the BRS party, including KTR and T. Harish Rao, left for New Delhi to show solidarity with Kavitha. All put together, it signaled that the case was very important for the party and they were hopeful of her getting a bail.
What Happens Next
Lawyers for Kavitha, for their part, are now trooping to a trial court armed with advice from the Supreme Court. The two still say that each is right and will be proved in the course of the argument as the legal battle is still on.
The matter can easily be considered more than crucial as it concerns the future of politician Kavitha and also the impression with which the BRS party would go before the masses of people who, at various places, are keenly waiting for the next decision from the trial court. There is a high level of expectation among the well-wishers and party members of Kavitha. They expect she would get bail and soon begin to argue her case in the court.
