In Hyderabad, the famous tradition of immersing Ganesh idols in Hussain Sagar lake is facing new rules this year. According to an order from the Telangana High Court, idols made from Plaster of Paris (PoP) cannot be immersed in the lake. This is to protect the lake from getting polluted.
The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) and the police have put up signs around Hussain Sagar saying that immersing PoP idols is not allowed. They have also put up iron fences to make sure the rules are followed. Only clay idols, which are eco-friendly, can be immersed in the lake this year.
Every year, people from all parts of the city bring their Ganesh idols to Hussain Sagar for immersion, but due to the High Court’s order, PoP idols must now be taken to special ponds or lakes made just for this purpose. GHMC has set up many such ponds around the city to help with the immersions.
These changes are important to keep the lake clean while still allowing people to celebrate the festival. Some groups have protested these rules, but the government is making sure that the court’s orders are followed.
The High Court’s decision shows that it is possible to respect traditions while also taking care of the environment.
