Overview

Hyderabad experienced a remarkable weather event yesterday, with heavy rainfall and thunderstorms causing widespread flooding and disruption across the city. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) in Hyderabad has issued a red alert, warning of extremely heavy rainfall in several districts for the next three days.

Record Rainfall

A record-breaking rainfall of 464 mm was witnessed within six hours at Vailpur in Nizamabad district of Telangana. This unprecedented amount of rain has created severe challenges for the local population and foundations. State Roads and Buildings Minister Vemula Prashant Reddy, along with District Collector Rajiv Gandhi Hanumanthu, toured the rain-ravaged areas and emphasized the historical importance of this event, noting that such heavy rainfall has never been recorded in the history of Telangana.

Impact on Hyderabad

In Hyderabad, the downpour began in the afternoon and continued into the evening, leading to important flooding in various parts of the city. Secunderabad recorded the highest rainfall within the city, reaching 116.5 mm by 6 pm. Other areas like Amberpet and Nampally also saw substantial rainfall, with 84.5 mm and 83 mm respectively.

The rains caused severe waterlogging in low-lying areas, including Yakutpura Bada Bazar, Dabeerpura, Malakpet, Rajendranagar, Aramgarh, Bandlaguda, Al Jubail Colony, and Tallabkatta. Many motorists faced challenges as their vehicles broke down due to the inundation on the roads. Tree felling incidents and widespread power outages were also reported, further complicating the situation.

Current Weather and Warnings

Today, the weather report indicates a continuation of moderate to heavy rains in Hyderabad, with the IMD predicting more heavy rains over the next four days. Hussain Sagar Lake has nearly reached its full tank level, heightening concerns about potential overflow and further flooding in the surrounding areas.

Residents are advised to remain cautious and prepared for further downpours. The IMD has issued guidelines urging people to avoid seeking shelter under trees and to stay away from electric poles and wires to ensure safety during the rains.
